Hexapoda is an exhibition of new works by metal artist, Colby Brinkman….
Icons of the underfoot underworld. A study of dissection and acts of fabrication, Hexapoda is a making in praise of the scorned, ignored, and underappreciated. The grass groomers, cave dwellers, sky crawlers, and tree huggers. The weavers, dobbers, and dung rollers. Those that keep our world revolving, even as we squish, spray, and exterminate. A simple celebration for the vast universe of the many legged creatures whose tireless work and selfless sacrifice brings food to our tables and clothes to our backs.
Colby Brinkman began his training as an artist and blacksmith in 1995. He spent two years as a journeyman under master smiths in Czech Republic, Italy and Spain. Since returning to Austin and opening Metal Mantis in 2005, Brinkman has applied his traditional blacksmithing to making metal sculptures, primarily larger-than-life insects — hence the name Metal Mantis. Brinkman is a founding member of the Austin Metal Authority, a collective of metal artists and blacksmiths. This exhibition begins with an opening reception on May 12th from 7 to 10pm and will be open to the public during the Dimension Gallery hours on Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 6pm from May 14th through May 29th.
